GATHER FARM
Job Title: Farm Director
Hours: Full-time, permanent, negotiable winter schedule
Compensation: Competitive annual salary, includes health/dental benefits
Background
GATHER is seeking the right candidate to manage approximately two acres at Gather Farm in Johnston, RI. GATHER is a socially conscious business based in Providence whose mission is to facilitate meaningful experiences for the community through ART, FOOD, and FARMING. Each of these three legs of the business operate independently while also feeding into the others and contributing to the collective mission of the organization. GATHER has been operating its glass blowing business, Gather Glass, in Providence for over ten years (www.gatherglass.com). The food and farming legs of the business are in different stages of development and Gather Farm is preparing this growing season to sustainably expand production.
Job Description
GATHER is looking for an experienced, innovative, flexible, and community minded farmer to manage the land at Gather Farm and to be an integral part of our overall vision and collaborative effort. This individual will be responsible for:
- Caretaking the land in a way that cultivates the health and vitality of the soil ecology, the living things that grow in it and on it, the people that engage with it and are nourished by it, and its intersection with the greater community.
- Maintaining and expanding current berry production;
- Implementing new herb and vegetable production;
- Maintaining the remaining acreage as an income generating farm operation (various ideas will be considered);
- Hiring and managing additional farm support and recruiting volunteers; and
- Working with the Gather team to accommodate and develop ideas for experiential activities on the farm.
This is a new position building on seven years of a strong partnership with the outgoing farmer on the property. The new Farm Director will work with the Gather team and ideally with the current farmer to transition the farming operations and pass on knowledge of the land. The farm and its surrounding land has a long 100 year history of farming, has been chemical free and regenerative for most of the last decade, is currently very well maintained, and is partially prepped for the upcoming 2022 growing season. Some infrastructure is in place and additional supplies will be provided upon agreement of an operating plan and budget. This position is full time with a negotiable schedule, includes health/dental benefits, and has the potential to develop into a part owner of the overall business.
