Hiring: Farm Field Manager at Coonamessett Farm in Falmouth, MA

The Farm Field Manager is one of three managerial positions on the farm; there is also a Livestock
Manager and a Store Manager. The Field Manager is responsible for coordinating and running the
activities in the farm’s fields and greenhouses. This person must be able to plan, organize, direct and
coordinate the workers and resources for efficient, well-prepared crop production. This person must
communicate well and effectively with the farm owners. This is a 40-60 hours/week job during the
months of May through December and 40 hours/week from January through April. The base work
schedule is 8.5 hours per day (0.5 hour for lunch) six days per week in season, but the schedule may
vary depending on scheduled events and work schedules of other staff being managed.

Duties and Responsibilities
*Communicates effectively with owners
*Communicates in a friendly and cooperative manner with customers and farm employees.
*Develops field employee work schedules
*Inventories and orders supplies for all aspects of crop production including seeding, transplanting,
and harvesting.

  • Prepares harvest for sale
    *Is primarily responsible for orderliness and cleanliness of the farm fields and greenhouses
    *Manages field, greenhouse, and CSA employees including: being responsible for maintaining a safe
    and healthy working environment for all the workers; ensuring all employees have read, understand
    and follow the policies in the employee manual; submits worker’s grievances to owners
    *Oversees, with the help of the owners, maintenance and care of farm equipment and develops lists
    for equipment repair and replacement
    *Helps the owners and farm accountant to maintain all required records
    *Oversees plant care for plants around the farm with the field staff. Plant care includes watering,
    fertilizing, insect and disease control, weed control, and animal pest control.
    *Develops and oversees seed starting and transplanting schedules
    *Coordinates with the CSA Leader CSA planting and weekly harvest schedules
    *Ensures field signage and picking lists updated
    *Manages six greenhouses and 6 acres of fields.
    *Maintains and repair irrigation and climate control systems.
    *Ensures all federal, state, local, and farm policies are followed
    •Maintains all required records
    •Maintains contacts and relations with wholesale crop accounts
    •Oversees participation in Farmer’s Markets
    •Trains and educates interns
    •Maintains Oyster facility records
    •Oversees wind turbine and photovoltaic array

Skills and Specification

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of crop production; field, hydroponic, and indoor farming
    operations including irrigation, disease prevention and pest remediation using IPM.
  • Must be qualified to apply pesticides
    *Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs for 15 feet, and to carry 25 lbs or more up and down stairs.
    *Must be able to communicate in a helpful and friendly fashion with customers, other employees
    and owners.
    *Must have a basic knowledge of computers and be able to use excel and word
    *Must be able to work long hours, sometimes during holidays

Education and Qualifications
*Should have previous experience managing a similar sized farm business
*Preferable has a college degree in horticulture
*Current driver’s license
