About Sakonnet Vineyard

Founded in 1975, Sakonnet Vineyard is New England’s oldest vineyard, located in the picturesque coastal town of Little Compton, Rhode Island. With over 50 years of winemaking tradition, we are committed to quality, sustainability, and innovation. We are in the process of converting to organic farming and embarking on a large replanting initiative. Additionally, we are expanding our agricultural efforts by growing seasonal crops for our on-site restaurant, furthering our commitment to a farm-to-table culinary experience.

Position Overview

We seek a motivated and experienced Farm Crew/Viticulture Technician to join our team. This role is essential in supporting the vineyard’s daily operations and long-term development. The ideal candidate will have or seek experience in vineyard management, organic farming, and regenerative agricultural practices. This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of an evolving vineyard, contributing to wine production and sustainable agriculture.

Responsibilities:

-Assist in vineyard operations, including trellis work, canopy management, harvesting, and undervine weed management.
-Participate in vineyard redevelopment and replanting projects.
-Support the vineyard’s organic conversion efforts, including composting, soil health management, and cover cropping.
-Aid in the production of seasonal crops for the farm-to-table restaurant.
-Operate tractors and implements for cultivation, mowing, spraying, and vineyard maintenance.
-Perform essential maintenance and repair on farm equipment
-Assist in livestock care and management, as applicable.
-Train on-site to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator’s permit.
-Maintain field records for tracking vineyard progress.
-Work flexible hours, including occasional weekends during peak growing season or inclement weather events.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience in viticulture, perennial crop farming, or orchard management.
-Background in organic, biodynamic, or regenerative agricultural practices.
-Familiarity with vineyard disease management and sustainable soil health practices.
-Experience operating tractors and agricultural machinery.
-Basic understanding of mechanical maintenance for farm equipment.
-Willingness to train and learn new skills, including obtaining a commercial pesticide applicator’s permit.
-Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
-A strong work ethic and ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.
